Teaching Assistant: |
This course is part one of a two-part senior design course. the primary objective of senior engineering design course is to expose the student to a real-world design or analysis experience. Students work in 3-4 person groups on a project directed by a practicing Professional Engineer or by a Civil Engineering Faculty Member. Secondary goals are to improve written and oral presentation skills and to learn more about engineering design.
Textbook: To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design (Paperback) by
Henry Petroski. The bookstore is getting copies and it is available on Amazon for less than $4 a copy. Note that if you get together with friends the postage (which costs as much as the book) will be reduced.
Each group will turn in a printout of all slides at the beginning of class when presentations are due. Time deadlines are strict; late work will be penalized 10%/day.
Class attendance is required!
Date |
Schedule |
January 18 |
Establish teams and class expectations
Go over oral presentation skills: presentation
rubric
Today: Turn in a sheet defining the groups. Maximum group size is
7 students except by permission. |
January 25 |
Rework groups given adds/drops were significant.
Bid for projects (roll dice when needed). Circle
through projects, no bid means a pass till next round, multiple
bids roll dice for winner. Keep going around until all projects

Design of an adjustable tilt parking canopy structure for mounting
of 3-phase Photovoltaic modules to be grid tied. I think my
ideal outcome would be a scalable system of parts and labor for installing
a structure and mounting PV in say for instance 25 kW increments. Example: The
Physical Plant has room for roughly 175 kW of PV as covered parking
structure to protect the plant assets (trucks). Seven increments
of the example 25 kW structure could be installed to meet this project
demand. Other parking areas could use more or less of this
idealized size depending on space limitations and electricity load
in the region of campus where these systems could be planted.

Group D CH2M Hill Pipline, Mentor:
Sanaan Lair
CH2M HILL has been contracted by the El Paso Water Utilities to
design an 84-inch gravity pipeline to convey stormwater from north
of I-10 near Piedras Street to a proposed pump station on the south
side of I-10. We will also design an 84-inch force main
to convey the stormwater from the pump station to the Rio Grande. The
initial design phase consisted of obtaining geotechnical boring
data and a survey of the area. This is nearly complete and
the design phase should start in February. The project will
also involve permit coordination activities with the International
Boundary and Water Commission, USACE, EPIWD#1, UPRR and TCEQ. The
purpose of the project is to correct the problem of the I-10 flooding
that occurred in 2006.
